Prayer & Worship
Prayer and worship are central to the daily life of St Oswald’s Catholic Primary School. We aim to nurture children’s spiritual growth by providing a variety of worship experiences: formal, informal, spontaneous, private, shared, and meditative.
Our pupils are actively involved in planning and leading liturgical prayer, both in their classrooms and in whole-school gatherings. Shared acts of worship take place in a reflective and peaceful atmosphere, encouraging everyone to listen to God and respond by living out their faith.
We are supported by a range of high-quality resources, including Primary News, Mark 10 Mission, and Ten Ten Resources, which help us provide children with a well-rounded spiritual experience and a deeper understanding of their faith.
Prayer and Liturgy at St Oswald’s includes:
-
Whole-school Celebrations of the Word
-
Class-led Celebrations of the Word
-
Class shared worship and prayer time.
-
Mass shared in school.
-
Daily school prayers
-
Prayer stations
Through these opportunities, children are guided to deepen their relationship with God and grow as active witnesses of their faith
Mini Vinnies
“Let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” — 1 John 3:18
The Mini Vinnies are the youngest members of the St Vincent de Paul Society (SVP), inspired by the motto “Turning concern into action” and guided by the mission to see, think, and do.
At St Oswald’s, our Mini Vinnies group includes pupils from Year 3 to Year 6 who actively live out this mission by supporting charities and helping people within our school and parish community.
The Mini Vinnies meet weekly with Mrs Hall Murray to discuss, share ideas, and plan activities that make a positive difference in the lives of others. This year, they will be organising events for Children in Need, Red Nose Day, and Rosary Month, helping to raise awareness and support for important causes both locally and nationally.
Faith in Action
“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” — 1 Peter 4:10
Our Year 6 pupils take part in the CYMFed Faith in Action Award, which has four levels: Pin, Bronze, Silver, and Gold.
Participants earn credits through service within the parish, school, and wider community. The award encourages pupils to reflect on their experiences of serving others, helping them discover new ways to live out and explore their faith. Reflection is supported through both guided group discussions and personal journaling.
Led by Mrs Mooney, our pupils work towards achieving the Pin level. Throughout the year, they plan and lead a variety of activities, including:
-
Remembrance Celebration of the Word and Poppy Appeal
-
Advent worship
-
Creating prayer cards for the community
-
Full and active participation in Mass, including some pupils serving as altar servers
-
Lenten reflections
Through this programme, pupils develop leadership skills, deepen their faith, and make a positive impact within the school and local community.
School Council
“Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be servant of all.” — Mark 10:43-44
At St Oswald’s, our School Council provides pupils with a voice in the life of the school and an opportunity to put Gospel values into practice. Council members work together to promote fairness, justice, and respect within the school community, reflecting Christ’s call to love and serve others. They help to identify ways to improve school life, organise charitable events, and support initiatives that benefit both the school and the wider community. Through active listening, teamwork, and responsible decision-making, the School Council encourages pupils to develop leadership skills while demonstrating compassion, empathy, and a commitment to the common good.
Eco Council
“The Lord God made all things, and they are very good.” — Genesis 1:31
At St Oswald’s, our Eco Council empowers pupils to care for God’s creation and put the teachings of Laudato Si’ into action. Members work together to promote environmental responsibility across the school, leading initiatives such as recycling projects, energy and water conservation, school gardening, and awareness campaigns about caring for the planet. Through their work, pupils learn to value the natural world, make sustainable choices, and encourage the whole school community to respect creation. The Eco Council reflects Gospel values by nurturing stewardship, responsibility, and care for our common home, helping children understand that protecting the environment is an essential part of loving our neighbour and living out our faith.
Wellbeing Council
“Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.” — Romans 12:15
At St Oswald’s, our Wellbeing Council empowers pupils to promote the physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing of everyone in the school community. Members work together to identify areas where support is needed, raise awareness about mental health and healthy lifestyles, and lead initiatives that encourage kindness, inclusion, and respect. Their work reflects Catholic Social Teaching, particularly the principles of human dignity, solidarity, and the common good, by ensuring that every member of the school feels valued, supported, and cared for. Through peer support, assemblies, and school-wide projects, the Wellbeing Council helps to foster a safe, nurturing, and compassionate environment where Gospel values are lived out daily.
